Description: The U.S. has begun piloting digital identities for federal documents. Notably, an “ID Pass” derived from a U.S. Passport can now be added to Google Wallet for use at airport security. In late 2023, Google (with State Department and TSA coordination) enabled American travelers to create a virtual ID on Android by scanning their passport and storing a signed digital credential (Passport Card) in Google Wallet. This digital ID is currently accepted by TSA at select checkpoints for domestic travel in lieu of a physical ID. (It’s an early pilot; the digital passport ID pass is read via QR or NFC at TSA, and the program may expand alongside Mobile Driver’s Licenses under TSA’s digital ID acceptance rules.)
